The New York Giants once again got hot at the right time of the NFL season, and rolled through the playoffs on into the Super Bowl where they met a familiar foe. Same story, same result, as the Giants knocked off the New England Patriots for a second time.
But after their first Super Bowl championship, New York failed to make the playoffs in the season following.
So it begs the question, what are the chances that the Giants repeat?
Coming into the 2012 NFL season, New York looks like they could play a serious contender once again. Eli Manning has certainly vaulted himself into the category of an elite quarterback, now owning one more championship than brother Peyton.
Let’s talk about why they could win it first.
As we mentioned, Manning is definitely one of the top quarterbacks in the NFL, and seems to play his best in the big games. Frankly, there aren’t many other quarterbacks you would want to make a drive with the game on the line.
It also helps that New York has one of the best tandems of wide receiver duos in Victor Cruz, and Hakeem Nicks. New York also drafted running back David Wilson out of Virginia Tech in the first round to help out with the running game by committee.
But when it comes down to it, the Giants’ experience, combined with the knowledge that they know they can win might be their best asset.
Going against the Giants though, it starts in their own division. The Philadelphia Eagles are expected to win the NFC East, which would put the Giants in the running for a potential wildcard. The schedule isn’t easy for New York either, with games against Pittsburgh, Green Bay, Atlanta, and Baltimore outside of their division games against Philadelphia and Dallas.
The schedule might be the biggest deterrent to the Giants repeating. But as they have shown, it’s just about getting into the playoffs. After that, it’s anyone’s game.
