We have reached the midway point of the 2012 NFL Season, and it’s time to take a look at how we rank the best teams in the league to this point. But the important thing is the second half run that all of these teams will try to continue.
It’s not just about how you start, it’s about how you finish. Though in the NFL, getting off to a good start certainly helps ease the pressure and seems to get things flowings.
You will notice, that these top-five NFL Power Rankings are heavily dominated by one conference over the other.
When you are the last undefeated team in the NFL, you get the top spot. And while some will say that the Falcons lack production in the postseason, I say that is based on the past, and not on the present which is where this team is playing. Atlanta looked dominant on the road against Philadelphia in a game in which many predicted the Eagles to win. The Falcons come back home to play Dallas in Week 9.
The Giants are playing like a team that won the Super Bowl last season. Eli Manning is undoubtedly an elite quarterback in this league. Combine that, with the terrorizing defensive front that the Giants put out on the field, and it makes life very difficult for an opposing quarterback. The Giants and Falcons play later in the regular season. That should be a good one folks.
Representing the AFC, the Houston Texans come in the third spot this week. Aside from the inept performance against the Packers a few weeks ago, the Texans have looked very good on both sides of the ball. Houston is the favorite to win the AFC, and it will be interesting to see which teams try to step up and challenge. NE? Pitt?
The Chicago Bears defense has scored five touchdowns in the Bears last six games. I don’t care who you are, that is impressive. The Bears have been playing arguably the best defense of any team in the NFL, and when Jay Cutler and the offense put it together, this team looks ready to make a run at a Super Bowl.
The 49ers still in my mind have the best defense in the NFL week in and week out. And while there are other good defense out there, if I’m looking for one defense to put on the field to stop just one drive, I’m putting this one on the field. Now, if only the offense can get it together and be more consistent.
