Vikings And Bucs Match Up In Week 8 On Thursday Night

The Minnesota Vikings are certainly one of the biggest surprises in the NFL this season, sitting at 5-2 on the season going into Week 8, in a Thursday night matchup at home against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

For the Bucs, they fell to a disappointing 2-4 record after a home loss to New Orleans on a last-second play that resulted in a penalty instead of the touchdown. ans in the stadium all became familiar with the rule relating to a receiver be unable to touch the ball first after coming out of bounds.

The result was a 35-28 loss, and now the Bucs find themselves four games behind the Atlanta Falcons in the NFC South.

Minnesota is just a half-game behind Chicago for the NFC North lead and one game in front of Green Bay. So this game against Tampa Bay on Thursday Night Football is certainly one of big importance.

The Vikings are a perfect 4-0 at home this season, and will try to push that record to five. Oddsmakers think that they will, as Minnesota is set as a touchdown favorite over the visiting Buccaneers. Quarterback Christian Ponder has exactly been lighting up the stats sheet, but he has been very efficient in his throws, and limited in his turning the ball over. Combine that with the fact that he gets to hand the ball off to Adrian Peterson, and dump it to Percy Harvin, and those playmakers are doing exactly what they get paid so much to do.

Make plays.

Tampa Bay quarterback Josh Freeman comes in off of a career high passing, where he tabbed over 400 yards and three touchdowns in the losing effort to the Saints on Sunday. At the very least, he should go in confident knowing that the offense had their best day so far this season.

But it will be a tough environment to go in and win at or Freeman and the Bucs, with a loss pushing them even further back in the division. They can’t afford too many more if they hope to put together a second-half run.

Tampa Bay and Minnesota kick off at 8:20 pm ET on Thursday night, with coverage on NFL Network.

A Lot On The Line In Week 7 Monday Night Football Between Lions And Bears

If the Detroit Lions hope to stay in the NFC North division race, they will need to go on the road on Monday Night in Week 7 and knock off the Chicago Bears. The Lions are currently two games behind Chicago in the standings, and will fall to three if they cannot overcome mistakes that have plagued themes thus far.

At 2-3, Detroit is coming off of a comeback victory in overtime against Philadelphia, or they would have been looking at 1-4. But as it stands, the Lions are still alive and kicking, but cannot afford to fall behind the Bears this far this early in the season.

As for Chicago, not much has gone wrong this season, but the Bears certainly face a significant challenge on defense with quarterback Matthew Stafford and receiver Calvin Johnson coming to town. Continue reading

Houston At The Head Of A Weak AFC Halfway Through 2012

The Houston Texans rebounded from their first loss of the season last week versus the Green Bay Packers, to come back and stomp the Baltimore Ravens 43-13 on Sunday afternoon in Week 7 of the NFL season.

One thing looks to be certain. Houston is the class of the AFC.

Fortunately for Houston, they do play in the AFC, as the NFC this season is looking mighty strong and will be a lot of fun to watch towards the end of the season and playoff time.

But the AFC is simply lackluster right now. Continue reading

Harbaugh Decision To Not Take Safety vs. Seahawks Costs Bettors Dearly

The Seattle Seahawks were involved in their second controversial game this season but this time in a loss to the San Francisco 49ers on Thursday night in Week 7.

No, it had nothing to do with a blown call, missed assignment, or turnover this time. The result of the game was as it should be. Sort of.

But if you were a bettor who placed a wager on the 49ers, then you are probably waking up this morning a little heated. And for good reason. Continue reading

Texans Try To Rebound From First Loss Against Ravens In Week 7

The Houston Texans lost their first game of the 2012 season, falling on the national stage to the Green Bay Packers last week. The loss only hurts the Texans as they prepare to grab home-field advantage throughout the playoffs, as the division is seemingly theirs for the taking. This week the top record in the AFC is up for grabs, as the Texans host the one-loss Baltimore Ravens. The Ravens are fresh off a two-point win over the Dallas Cowboys and are on the verge of running away with the AFC North, much like the Texans are going to run away with the AFC South. This has the making of a knockdown, drag out game in Houston, especially with the physical nature of both teams. Continue reading

Redskins And Giants Gear Up For Big NFC East Matchup

Robert Griffin III did everything in the Redskins Sunday win over the Vikings, including a long touchdown run late in the fourth quarter to ice away the win. Doing everything is exactly why the Redskins drafted the rookie quarterback out of Baylor, and to this point, it seems to be paying off. However on Sunday Griffin will have his first opportunity to take down a divisional opponent, and no better way to start than facing off against Eli Manning and the defending Super Bowl champion New York Giants. Manning and company are fresh off a beat-down of the San Francisco 49ers, and look to be the class of the NFC East to this point, especially with the Eagles reeling. Sunday’s matchup will be a true test for the Redskins, especially if they want to stay in the divisional hunt. Continue reading

Seahawks And 49ers Get Ready For Huge Game In NFC West

Who would have thought that a Week 7 matchup on Thursday night in the NFC West between the San Francisco 49ers and the Seattle Seahawks would be for the division lead over the other?

My guess is not many.

For one, the 49ers were set as huge favorites to win the division this season, as they ran away with it in 2011.

Second, Seattle came into the season starting rookie quarterback Russell Wilson, and the nature of a rookie starting would tend for people to lean in the direction of a rebuilding or a non-contending phase for the season.

Wrong. Continue reading

NFL Week 7 Power Rankings

There is just one undefeated team left in the NFL, as we saw the Houston Texans fall from the ranks of the unbeaten in Week 6. That leaves only the Atlanta Falcons a the lone team in the league without a blemish on the record.

But coming into Week 7, are the Falcons really the best team in the NFL? After all, there are some very good teams out there with a loss to their record.

Let’s check out our top-five team this week and see how they stack up. Continue reading

Three-Way Tie Atop Super Bowl Odds Through Week 6

The Atlanta Falcons might be the only undefeated team left in the NFL through six weeks of the season, but that still hasn’t been enough to convince oddsmakers that they are the team to beat when it comes to the Super Bowl.

In fact, they barely make it into the top-five.

Huh?

Ok, well let’s look at who is in front of them on Bovada Sportsbook’s latest Super Bowl XLVII betting odds that were released following Denver’s great Monday Night comeback against San Diego last night.

There is a three-way tie at the top of the list of Super Bowl favorites. The Houston Texans, New England Patriots, and San Francisco 49ers have all been set with odds at 6/1

What do these three teams have in common?

They all lost in Week 6, two of which were playing at home (Texans, 49ers).

The Texans were dominated by Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers in a blowout 42-24 loss on Sunday Night Football. The Patriots were knocked around by the Seahawks, and sit at just 3-3 on the season. The 49ers vulnerabilities were on full display, as they were beat down at home by the New York Giants.

So I have to wonder what in the world oddsmakers are thinking right now?

Apparently winning in this league doesn’t count for very much. I will give you that Houston is still 5-1 after the loss and has looked great all season. But the Falcons have three more wins than the the Patriots and two more than San Francisco. The Falcons have not had a game where they looked inept and were dominated.

I would put Atlanta over both San Francisco and New England, and right on the level with Houston, maybe even ahead of them.

Furthermore, I would take the Giants and Bears and thrust them ahead of the Patriots at the very least, and perhaps even San Francisco. After all, the Giants are 2-0 against the 49ers in their last two meeting, both of which came on San Francisco’s home field.

I guess the best thing I can tell you is to take advantage of these odds right now, and get some good betting lines on the teams that I mentioned.

With Houston’s Blowout Loss Are The Texans Still Super Bowl Favorites?

And then there was one.

Coming into the weekend, the Atlanta Falcons and Houston Texans were the last two unbeaten teams in the NFL. The Falcons took care of business early on Sunday afternoon, thanks to a last-second field goal by Matt Bryant.

Houston wasn’t so lucky, they ran into an angry Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers.

Rodgers racked up six touchdown passes in a 42-24 beatdown of the last unbeaten in the AFC. Of course, the Packers were probably playing with a bit of desperation, as they came into the game at 2-3 on the season.

But as good as the Texans defense has been this season, they were certainly exposed by Rodgers on Sunday night in front of a national television audience.

Houston came in as the favorites to win the Super Bowl, but should they still be considered in that role after this loss?

Well, Atlanta is 6-0, and other contenders such as the Patriots and 49ers lost as well. Look, teams aren’t going to win all of their games this season. The Falcons will lose eventually too. So there isn’t a big reason for concern in Houston just yet, even though they lost by 20 points.

It was to the 2011 NFL MVP afterall, who was playing basically to stay alive in the NFC North. Green Bay could not afford to fall to 2-4 on the season with the Chicago Bears sitting at 4-1 atop the standings.

Houston is still a prime Super Bowl contender, and still should be considered the favorite in the AFC.

But there are definitely some glaring vulnerabilities that were on full display at home against the Packers. But now they know what can be fixed, and should be able to regroup before another huge game, this time against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 7. It will be very important, as the Texans do not want to go into their Bye week with back-to-back losses.

We will get to know Houston a lot better after their game against the Ravens.
