There is no question that the NFL has shifted to more of a spread offense, in which the passing game and quarterbacks throw the ball all over the field. Gone are the days of tough hard-nosed football in the trenches.

Coming into the 2012 NFL season, the NFC North division is arguably the best in the entire league. With three teams, Green Bay, Chicago, and Detroit, all expected to make a push for the playoffs and perhaps a berth in the Super Bowl, things are looking good.

It started with the Indianapolis Colts ushering in a new era by selecting Andrew Luck No.1 in the 2012 NFL draft. It ended with a shutdown corner from South Carolina being taken. There were eight other picks in between these, as the top-10 draft picks look to come into their rookie season and make an impact.

There is no question that there were pieces in place for the Denver Broncos to be successful even before Peyton Manning declared that he was going to be their new quarterback. You can simply refer back to last season, with the Broncos winning the the division, albeit a relatively weak AFC West. Then the team went on to defeat the Pittsburgh Steelers in the wildcard round, before dropping to the Patriots in the divisional round.
Coming into the 2012 NFL season, there is one team that has endured more than the rest. That would be the New Orleans Saints, and the bounty scandal that rocked the league. The end result is that the Saints will be without their head coach for the entire season, a suspension that was unprecedented.
There might not be a more competitive or better division in the NFL than the NFC North coming into the 2012 NFL Season. At least on paper. The Green Bay Packers, Detroit Lions, and Chicago Bears are all expected not only to be playoff contenders, but potential Super Bowl teams.
We are in the midst of the first week of the 2012 NFL Preseason, with things getting underway on Thursday night. The Hall of Fame game already took place between New Orleans and Arizona, but that’s all the preseason action so far.
