The New England Patriots have overtaken the Green Bay Packers as the new favorites to win the 2012-13 Super Bowl. It’s an interesting change considering that we are still in the preseason, and these odds don’t typically shift.
However, Green Bay and New England were very close even before this change at the top was made.
In fact, they flip-flopped.
The Patriots are going off at 6/1 on the odds win the Super Bowl in New Orleans this season, which the Packers come in at 13/2.
But why the change?
It is interesting to think about why oddsmakers at Bovada Sportsbook would install a new favorite at the top of the list in the preseason. Especially when considering the fact that quarterback Tom Brady has played very little this preseason. He has not shown any more extraordinary performances than last season.
On the other side of the ball, Green Bay hasn’t looked particularly great this preseason, that included a 35-10 loss to Cleveland. But it’s the preseason, and the starters have played in limited action. If oddsmakers were to make a change, we would think it would be after this upcoming week. The third game of the preseason is typically when the starters will play their most minutes. But that doesn’t start until tonight.
So if it’s not on the field, than it could really only be one other thing. There are a lot of wagers coming in on New England to win the Super Bowl. Enough to warrant a small shift in the betting odds going into Week 1 of the NFL regular season.
Obviously, bettors look at the Patriots just below the Packers, and like their position on the betting line. Bets were made. Odds were changed. It’s how the game is works.
One thing is clear though, and that is that Green Bay and New England have set themselves apart on the betting line. There isn’t miles between them and the rest of the league, but it’s certainly enough to notice.
a Packers vs Patriots Super bowl in New Orleans is definitely headlining the bets.
