We all knew it was going to be an interesting ride for the New York Jets in 2012 behind Mark Sanchez and Tim Tebow.
And it’s already started in the preseason. But it’s not a controversy. It’s more of an issue of whether or not either one of these quarterbacks will be productive at all.
The one things that the Jets do have going for them right now is the benefit of the four games in the preseason. Because after two, it’s rather discouraging. Just imagine for a second if the offense was struggling like this in the regular season.
My first thought when the Jets did sign Tebow in the offseason was why? Who does this benefit? How will he be an asset?
And when New York said that there was no controversy, Sanchez will be the starter, it again raised red flags.
Again, why bring him in? For the redzone, really? For the Wildcat? Ok.
The problem is that Sanchez is Sanchez. And what is meant by that is simply that he has not established himself as an upper tier quarterback in the league. He struggles. Yes, the team made it to consecutive AFC championship games, but that was largely due to the defensive side of the ball.
Let’s take a step back for a minute though and say why the move makes sense.
Competition should bring out the best in an athlete at this level, and the presence of Tebow on Sanchez, and Sanchez on Tebow should spurn these two quarterbacks to work as hard as ever. In that respect, it could be perceived as a solid move.
But just wait until the first game of the season, or the second game of the season when Sanchez had a couple of picks, and the offense struggles to a loss.
You don’t think fans in New York will be screaming for Tebow?
It just doesn’t bode well for the psyche of Sanchez in any way, shape or form. This is how you show your dedication to a quarterback who just signed a new long-term deal?
