NFL analysts throw out statistics all the time about teams in certain positions having the chance to make the playoffs, and how many teams in history have done various things. At this point in the season through six games, it’s pretty clear for the majority of teams as to who the contenders are going to be for the rest of the way. But it’s not the case for every single one.
There are some teams that are under performing, but still have the potential to string together some wins if they are able to generate some momentum.
Let’s take a look at three teams through six weeks of the season that have two wins or less that have the best chance to reach the postseason, or at the very least can turn things around into a positive direction.
The Atlanta Falcons are the biggest surprise of the 2013 NFL season through the first six weeks, in terms of teams predicted to make a Super Bowl run. At just 1-4, Atlanta is already 3.5 games behind the division-leading New Orleans Saints. The Falcons have blown two games in the last drive, allowing teams to march down the field and score the go-ahead points with just seconds remaining (Dolphins, Jets). But it’s not all Atlanta’s fault. They have been ravaged by injuries on both sides of the ball. The latest hit was the loss of Julio Jones for the rest of the season. The good news is that running back Steven Jackson will be back, after missing the last three games. But other injuries are still mounting.
The mystery behind the Texans losing four in a row after starting 2-0 is pretty simple. They are making huge mistakes and helping teams beat them. In each of their four losses Houston has thrown a pick-six, which set a new NFL record. The Texans have plenty of talent, but the mistakes are adding up to be too big to overcome. Houston can still get back in the playoff race though, as they have the potential to put together some wins and turn the season around. It starts with just one victory. They have a huge opportunity in Week 7 against undefeated Kansas City.
This may sound crazy, but with Josh Freeman set to start, we think that it could be a great fit together. Freeman was clearly not happy in Tampa Bay, and perhaps him moving to a new team has reenergized the quarterback. Freeman is talented, and has the potential to fit in well with the offense. Handing the ball off to Adrian Peterson will be nice, but at the same time if he can get some passing offense going, Freeman might end up to be Peterson’s best friend. Don’t be surprised to see Minnesota go on a bit of a run and perhaps be the team to talk about in the second half.
