JaMarcus Russell and Tim Tebow couldn’t have two more different images outside of the football field, and even when it comes to their work ethic in practice. For Tebow, he has always been known as the first to arrive, and the last to leave. That worker who is diligent in trying to improve. The opposite can be said for Russell, the former 2007 No.1 overall draft selection. Well, at least that’s how he used to be.
What these two quarterbacks have in common right now though, is that they are both seeking employment opportunities within the NFL.
Tebow was let go by the New York Jets last month, while Russell was released several years ago by the Oakland Raiders.
Both players come with a lot of baggage.
For Tebow, it’s a media circus with whatever he does. Despite the fact that he has had an unsuccessful stint in the NFL as a quarterback so far, the media continues to be infatuated with him. A team that picks him up will have to know going in that he will come with that type of attention. Some teams might be able to handle it, some teams won’t. The Jets proved that they weren’t able to deal with with what they had, but that could mostly be tied down to a lack of production. Tebow rarely saw the field in New York, and that was behind Mark Sanchez, who isn’t exactly a top-tier quarterback in the league.
For Russell, it’s overcoming his history with the Raiders, combined with off-the-field issues that include multiple arrests for drugs. But all indications are pointing to that being put behind him. In his attempt to come back, Russell has dropped 50 pounds, going from 315, down to 265, and is sligning it around the football field. Could it be the image of the former top pick? Perhaps.
The question is, which teams will take a chance on these players. And furthermore, which player will get picked up first for the 2013 NFL Season?
In our opinion, the upside lies with Russell. Of the two, he has the vastly superior arm, and
has the ability to make any throw on the field.
Tebow can’t. Not to mention it’s not worth all of the attention that will be brought to the team’s starting quarterback. What’s certain is that if he is signed, it won’t be for a starting QB. So then the question is whether or not a front office and coaching staff wants to put that pressure on their starter. The smart answer is no. Now, if Tebow is signed at a different position, that could work, but it wouldn’t be long until we hear the whispers of him looking at trying to become the starting quarterback.
Look for Russell to be picked up and given a chance at quarterback before Tebow. If the reports are true, and he is turning things around, he might be worth a shot.
