It’s not quite time to panic if you are a San Francisco 49ers fan, but there are certainly some reasons where you would be concerned, feeling that the game on Thursday night all of a sudden is a huge matchup on the schedule.
The 49ers bring their 1-2 record on the road during a short week to take on a division opponent in the St. Louis Rams.
First, at this point in the season to predict San Francisco would be 1-2 would have been a stretch. But even if they were to be 1-2, you wouldn’t think that they would have this record by being out-scored 56-10 over the course of their last two games.
The 49ers lost 29-3 to Seattle, and then the very next week dropped 27-7 to Indianapolis. The loss to the Colts was at home nonetheless.
After a great start to the season in Week 1 with a win over Green Bay in which he threw for over 400 yards, quarterback Colin Kaepernick has been ineffective since. He has been prone to turnovers and has completed less than 60 percent of his passes.
Oddsmakers still have faith in San Francisco this season, as they continue to be a top-five Super Bowl favorite at 12/1. Though with a loss against the Rams on Thursday night and that might continue to drop significantly.
Fans of the 49ers should continue to be optimistic because the talent is there, but there is no doubt some turmoil.
And with Seattle playing so well at the moment, San Francisco is already two games back in the division through three weeks, which includes a loss to them already. The 49ers will get the Seahawks at home later in the year, but the loss puts them backed up into a corner.
The good news is that the schedule get easier starting in Week 4 with St. Louis. They follow that up with a tough matchup with Houston, but then it’s a game against Arizona, before going on the road against Tennessee and Jacksonville, with a bye week in Week 9.
There should be at least four wins over the course of the next five-game stretch for the 49ers, which would put them at 5-3 through eight games if they were to do that. There isn’t much room for error going forward in the NFC West, as they have to try to keep pace with Seattle.
